Helping People Through Tough Family Law Issues

The Support Collection Unit (SCU) is an agency that was designed to help collect and distribute payments for child support.  Anyone who receives child support has the right to request that their court order require their payments be made through their county’s SCU, but before you do so, you need to know about all of the pros and cons of going through the SCU.

The pros of using the Support Collection Unit:

  • The SCU keeps meticulous records of payments. If there is any question of whether you paid or not in the future, the SCU will have records they can pull. This also limits arguments about what has been paid and what still needs to be paid.
  • The SCU can help enforce child support. If the non-custodial parent doesn’t pay their child support, the SCU has many methods for enforcing payment, including garnishing wages, filing a violation petition and credit bureau reporting.

The cons of using the Support Collection Unit:

  • Payments can take a bit longer to get to you when you use the SCU. Rather than simply receiving the payment, when you use the SCU, the payment has to be received, processed and then delivered to you.
  • When you use the SCU, you have fewer payment options. Even if it is more convenient, you can’t simply hand the custodial parent a check or cash rather than paying through the SCU. Since these payments aren’t processed through the SCU, the other parent could claim that they are a gift rather than child support.

As you can see, there are both pros and cons to using the Support Collection Unit. Need help determining the right solution for you? Our child support attorney in Hauppage can help! Contact us today!
