Helping People Through Tough Family Law Issues

Legally, there are two ways to end a marriage, through divorce or annulment.

When you want to end your marriage, you don’t have a whole lot of options at your disposal. You could either get a divorce or an annulment. Some might think that a legal separation is another option for ending a marriage, but in a separation, you are legally still married, even if you aren’t living with the other person. Not many people truly understand the difference between a divorce and an annulment, and that’s why our divorce lawyer in Hauppauge has set out to help you learn about each option available to you.

What is a divorce?

A divorce is sometimes called a legal dissolution of marriage, and it is used to end a valid marriage. A divorce brings both parties back to a single status legally. While divorces may seem straightforward, they are often complicated matters, and to make things even more complicated, there are several types of divorces that you can get. Check out our previous blog to learn about the different kinds of divorce.

What is an annulment?

Annulments also end marriages, but they doesn’t stop there. If a marriage is annulled, it is declared to be invalid. This means that the marriage legally never happened in the first place, at least in the eyes of the court. Annulments are usually a lot less complicated than divorces, and many people pursue them to avoid the stigma of being divorced.

Now that you understand the basic differences between divorces and annulments, you need to learn what the grounds are for an annulment in the state of New York. Stay tuned for our next blog to learn more.
